All-New Jeep Grand Cherokee L Review

Jeep is renowned for creating powerful, comfortable SUVs that are just as happy in the wilderness as cruising the city streets. But while their range covers a wide variety of model styles, until recently they’ve concentrated on the two-row format only. This has now changed with the release of three all-new three-row models, one of which upgrades the classic Grand Cherokee to increase the seating and improve the feature set. Read our Grand Cherokee L review to find out what this great new full-size SUV offers to Canadian drivers.

V6 or V8 Engine Options

For its initial release, the Grand Cherokee L is available with a choice of two powerful engines. The entry level trims boast a 3.6L V6 with an output of 295 horsepower and 260lb-ft of torque, a healthy amount of power for most daily driving needs. But if weekend off-road adventuring is your thing, moving up to the 5.2L V8 provides an impressive 360 hp and 390lb-ft, powering the L over even the toughest trails without breaking sweat. But whatever your power needs, both engines are coupled with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive.

Spacious, Luxurious Interior

In the standard setup, the Grand Cherokee seats six passengers with the second row containing a pair of captain’s chairs. However, a bench-seat replacement is available which takes the capacity up to seven. And the new cabin isn’t just larger, but more luxurious too. Depending on the trim, expect upscale features including quilted leather upholstery, heated and ventilated seats, a massage function, and open pore wood trim.

Advanced Active Safety

Safety technology is a high point of current Jeep models, and the Grand Cherokee L is no exception. Key standard and available options include:

– Driver drowsiness monitoring.

– Forward collision warnings with automatic detection of pedestrians and cyclists.

– Lane departure warnings, keep assist, and self-centring steering.

– Blind Spot monitoring plus rear cross-traffic alerts.

– 360-degree camera, rear backup camera.

– Traffic sign recognition.

– Automated parking assist.

Great Infotainment

The L is fitted with a 10.1″ infotainment touchscreen running the powerful Uconnect 5 software. Both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, with wireless connectivity available on higher trims. Integrated navigation is an an available upgrade, including real-time weather and traffic reports, and connectivity is completed by 12 USB ports spread throughout the cabin.

2021 Grand Cherokee L Pricing

At release, the Grand Cherokee L is available in a range of trims starting with the entry-level Laredo at $52,495. The V8 engine makes its first appearance with the Overland trim, which comes in at $72,490, while the upscale Summit Reserve trim with all the bells and whistles completes the lineup at $81,985.

Jeep Grand Cherokee Review: The Verdict

The Grand Cherokee L’s extra row is the main talking point, but there’s more to the new release than simple extra space. The upgraded interior places the new model firmly in the upscale space, while the impressive infotainment and safety tech ensures it’s a thoroughly modern SUV that fully deserves a place at the head of the three-row pack.
