2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe – First Look

The list of electric and hybrid models on the market seems to grow on a daily basis, but so far Jeep has been keeping quiet about its electrification plans. All that’s now changed with the launch of the Wrangler 4xe, the first hybrid Jeep, and the opening salvo in a multi-billion dollar plan to electrify the company’s entire range.

What does this new hybrid mean for the future of this iconic model? Read our 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe review to find out.

Advanced Hybrid Powertrain

Even taking just the gas engine into account, the 4xe looks like an enticing prospect with its 2.0L turbo-4 powering all-wheel drive through a smooth eight-speed automatic transmission. But once the hybrid technology comes into play the powertrain is taken to a new level entirely.

Dual electric motors are powered by a 17.3kWh battery pack tucked seamlessly under the rear seats, combining with the gas mill to produce an amazing 375 horsepower and 470lb-ft of torque. This powertrain has more than enough grunt to make the 4xe the best performing Wrangler so far, but when you add in the instant torque brought by the electric motors, the responsiveness and agility are incredible.

Electric Range and Fuel Economy

Although the electric range isn’t as vital a point for a hybrid as for a full EV, the 4xe is capable of up to 40km of all-electric driving. According to Jeep, it will take only two hours to fully recharge the battery at a 240V Level 2 charging point.

The other main benefit of a hybrid is, of course, great fuel economy. The 4xe steps up to the mark with a combined rating of 4.7L / 100km, a highly impressive figure considering the power pouring out from under the hood.

Advanced Infotainment and Technology

The 4xe may be mainly about advanced powertrain engineering, but there’s no shortage of technology in the cabin. Either a 7″ or 8.4″ touchscreen is fitted to every model, with smartphone integration provided by both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay as standard. A Wi-Fi hotspot facility is available, along with navigation and a forward-facing camera for increased visibility ahead of the front wheels.
